What is the science of sustainability? We start by exploring what it is about. It needs to have a clear object of study. If we hadn't, we could not educate or train people to know, study and report about specific things and aspects.

Robert Kates defines Sustainability Science as "an emerging field of research dealing with the interactions between natural and social systems, and with how those interactions affect the challenge of sustainability: meeting the needs of present and future generations while substantially reducing poverty and conserving the planet's life support systems.” (PNAS December 6, 2011, vol. 108, no. 49, 19449–19450 link ).

As object of sustainability science want to explore:

* Sustainability.

* Systems, especially Natural systems and Social systems.

* Problems to current and Future Generations vis-à-vis their needs, ambitions and possibilities.
